That denim is a versatile and universal fabric is something that everyone knows, and that for many good blue jeans are the perfect companions of travel and adventure, too. But what do you know about the true story of denim?
Some say that this fabric has its origins in the city of Nimes-France-in the seventeenth century. And that thanks to its resistance, it was soon demanded by European merchants, who baptized the fabric as 'denim' -of Nimes-. At the time, it was used to make tarpaulins, awnings and even ship sails, as its great strength and durability were allies to combat rain, wind and stormy weather.
Later, in the mid-nineteenth century in the United States, Levi Strauss opened a store of articles for miners where he sells pants made of the same fabric used in awnings and canvas, which he designs himself. Thus, Levi imports denim from France to the US and begins to popularize the properties of this fabric, which is gaining more and more followers. In this way, Levi begins to perfect the product reinforcing the seams and pockets with rivets, and already in the twentieth century the denim begins to be used to make the clothing of soldiers and military, which makes the fabric come back, already evolved, to the old continent.
In the middle of that century, the history of denim continues and this fabric stands among young people as a symbol of rebellion, consecrating itself as a universal fabric that it is today, when world stars such as Elvis Presley and James Dean began to wear the well-known blue jeans.
However, some people say that the origins of denim are in Italy or Great Britain. As explained by Stefano Aldighieri, of Design Studio, in the fifth edition of Kingpins, "nobody knows exactly. Denim has existed in different forms for hundreds of years, "underlining that" the substance has existed for much longer than Levi's has been working on it.
"Today there is a great infinity of jeans, but if there are ones that really remind us of those first Texans, they are the Petty Retro Blue Used - as a girl. It is a 100% cotton jeans, hard and highly resistant. A pair of jeans for a lifetime!
